About Department

Dreams and wishes are nothing more than desired. Desires become strong when they are supported by direction, dedication, determination, discipline and deadlines. Goals are dreams with a deadline and action plan.

With a long-cherished desire to give quality education to the students of the economically backward rural area, the Department of Chemistry, Saldiha College started its humble beginning in the year 1967. First the department started doing what was necessary, then what was possible and suddenly the impossible. Here lies the necessity for every society in its movement from present to future course to turn its vision occasionally towards its achievement and history.

Initially the department was started in the Saldiha High School building with only B.Sc. Pass Course level and subsequently the department was shifted to the southern part of the main College building in the year 1971 and B.Sc. Honours Course had been introduced in 1972. At present total area of the department is about 500 square meter with three general laboratory, two research laboratory, one class room, one office room, one store room, one instruments room. This department after its long journey has found its mission accomplished with a successful track record.

Our students generally come from the middle class families with a desire to shine in life inspite of lack of proper infrastructure in their families for higher education. It gives us immense pride to see that our students have been well placed in different spheres of life as in the field of education, research, administration etc. The inspired collective performance rendered by the teaching and non-teaching members of this department within a limited framework make them feel like a member of this family who share both the success as well as failure of our students.

Recently the numbers of teaching faculty members of the Department is eight and are doing well with their own responsibilities.

Objectives

The most important thing one can learn is to “learn to learn”. Education ought to teach us not only how to make a living but also how to live. Education of mind without morals creates a menace to the society. Knowledge strategically applied translates into wisdom, ensuring success.

With the flood of new ideas and information it appears that courses in Chemistry should be restructured in such a way as to present unifying principles of Chemistry, particularly to beginners. Today Chemists find themselves working in areas currently described as interfaces. Chemistry has truly developed into Chemical Sciences and the Chemists are making significant contributions in areas beyond the bounds of just Chemistry. So, strong interaction between various branches of Chemistry and the increasing exchange of ideas between chemistry and other sciences should be recognized. Today with increasing threat to environment more and more realization comes to find greener alternatives named as “Green Chemistry”. Reduction in the requirement of Chemicals in any stages of processes is important and of interest to Chemists.

The main objective of this Department is to impart knowledge and to create awareness among the students about a broad-based education which really means that student is prepared for life without loosing their areas of specialization or competence. It is our earnest effort to create a brigade of Chemists along with the intellectual education of understanding human dignity and Compassion, who not only can earn their livelihood but also act with the mission to create awareness among general mass of people that “being ignorant is not so much a shame as being unwilling to learn to do things the right way”.
